Roma Day 3 - The Pantheon and a visit with the Pope

Another early morning walk along Via Veneto (the La Dolce Vita street)
Interesting entrance to a shop on Via Veneto (luxury hotels and shopping!)
Entrance to the Vatican - the line to get in was probably a kilometre long (lucky we booked a tour - even if we did have to put up with some annoying people, one man, whom our guide kept cheekily referring to as Julius Caesar - he didnt' get it!)
Inside the Belvedere Courtyard of the Vatican Palace - and yes, that is a giant pinecone! (a 1st century one)
The big bronze sphere inside the Belvedere Courtyard, which replicates the one on top of St Peter's Basilica
The frescoes and artworks lining the corridors of the palace were incredible!
Another beautiful frescoe inside the palace
One of the most famous sculptures inside the palace - it shows the Trojan priest, Laocoon and his sons being strangled by sea serpents (nice!)
Beautiful mosaic floor - only about 1700 years old! and still so well preserved
Just another beautiful frescoed ceiling. No pics of the Sistine Chapel I'm afraid as we weren't allowed to take photos in there. It was amazing though!
The Pieta by Michaelangelo - inside St Peter's Basilica. Depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of Mary after the crucifixion. Apparently some crazy came into the church and bashed it with a hammer in the 70s, so now it's behind protective glass.
Interior walls of St Peter's Basilica - the letters in the photo above are over 6ft - just to give you some idea of how huge this place is!
For you Libby! Chris being a good Catholic inside St Peters Basilica
The Pope himself! He actually wasn't in residence at the time of our visit, but at his summer house where it's cooler!
View of St Peters Basilica from St Peters Square
All this religious stuff makes me hungry - gelati back on the streets of Rome (we have pretty much had at least one a day since we arrived in Italy)
Inside the Pantheon (which we visited on Sunday, but was too early to get inside)
More of the Pantheon - gives you an idea of the huge domed ceiling
Outside the Pantheon in Piazza della Rotunda - much busier than when we were here at 6.30am the day before!
Chris got pretty excited about this little delicatessen - as can be expected!
